Nicole Helps Her Refugee Students Adjust

Nicole Myers, a middle school English teacher for refugees at King Middle School in Portland, ME, always goes above and beyond for her students. Ms. Myers knows the trauma and sacrifice these refugees and their families have to face, so she creates a warm and welcoming environment for these students. You’ll find stuffed animals, books, calming lights and plush chairs all around her classroom to give her students enough stimulation and comfort for when they may have a challenging or rough day.

During her class, Nicole loves to take her students outside into the park, or across the street to get donuts. She has also gone on the local bus with her students to teach them about their surroundings and get them comfortable getting around the city. Nicole even provides her students with snacks when they stay after school or when they get hungry.

When the Pandemic hit, Nicole drove to every students’ house to check up and make sure they had everything they needed, as many of her students’ families are lower-income and rely on many of the industries that were affected by the global pandemic.

Nicole adores every one of her students and treats them like they were her own children. No matter what background, or what hardships her students have faced, she is more than willing to give them everything she possibly can.
